Mike Marshall & Caterina Lichtenberg

Two of the greatest mandolinists in the world, each from very different musical backgrounds, have begun what is sure to be one of the sweetest collaborations in the long and varied history of their chosen instrument.

Mike Marshall and Caterina Lichtenberg will take you on a journey through the history of the mandolin as it made its way from 16 th century Europe to the new world of the Americas, picking up strains of melodies from each new place and the many musical hands that it touched.

Mike Marshall continues to build musical bridges with mandolinists from around the world. From his early days with the David Grisman Quintet or his founding of the Modern Mandolin Quartet, to his now famous cds with bluegrass wiz kid Chris Thile and Brazilian virtuoso Hamilton de Holanda.

In each of these musical collaborations Mike has taken us on a journey without a road map. Taking the music both forward and backward in time and closing the gaps between tradition, geography and musical styles to the point where the seams have become invisible.

This time he will team with one of the finest classical virtuosos in the world today. Living in the former East Germany, Caterina Licktenberg is now the at the peak of her recording and performance career with over 10 cds to her credit and tours of the U.S. Japan, Europe and South America.

She was born in Bulgaria and finished her university studies at the Cologne Academy of Music under Prof. Wilden-Husgen and Prof. Eickhoit. She now holds the position of head mandolin professor at the music academy in Wuppertal, Germany, where she also directs the Baroque Ensemble

Mike and Caterina first met when Mike hired her to teach at his Mandolin Symposium in Santa Cruz, California, (a week long gathering of over 150 students and nine of the best instructors from around the world) The two made an instant musical connection and have been finding common repertoire and learning from each other ever since.

Over the course of the evening, these two virtuosos will take you on a journey of the mandolin as it began in the 1600s. Caterina performs solo pieces on her Baroque Mandolin (an ancient instrument with gut frets and a quill from a bird feather that she uses for a plectrum). Mike may play a Bach cello suite on his mandocello. From there they go to the heartland of the mandolin - Italy -   where they play music from the golden age of the mandolin, the late 19 th century by Raphael Callaci.

As the Italians traveled the world they brought their mandolins with them, and we now have a long history for the instrument in the British Isles and the Americas that is rich with mandolin styles built on the idea of musicians finding common ground together.

Whether it's old-time Bluegrass or Jazz or Brazilian or Venuzuelan, the mandolin has been a part of our musical heritage.

When you hear a musician with the technical ability that transforms music into something indescribable, you realize that you are in the presence of something very special. Caterina and Mike both have this musical ability and sensitivity and can transform the feeling in the room into an almost spiritual place.

They just completed two concerts in Germany this past October and have plans to record a cd together this winter, and to tour and perform as much as possible in 2009.

Caterina Lichtenberg is a sought-after artist and lecturer at national and international festivals and master classes. She was, for example, invited as a guest to perform at the International Mandolin Festival in Kobe (Japan), at the International Mandolin Convention in Washington and Minneapolis (USA), and at the Domaine Forget Music and Dance Academy (Canada). She has also performed in concert with the European Plucked String Orchestra in Logroño (Spain) and Bologna (Italy) as well as at the Nürtingen Guitar Festival.

Apart from her duo work with Mirko Schrader (Duetto Giocondo), she performs as a soloist and in other chamber music settings, e.g., together with Thomas Müller-Pering (guitar; Germany); John Dearman (guitar; USA), Silke Lisko (Duo Galante), Brigitte Engelhard (cembalo; Austria), the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (USA) and orchestras such as the Dresden Symphony Orchestra, the Aachen Chamber Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the members of the Ensemble Recherche, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. A joint appearance with Art Garfunkel at a TV show complements her artistic work.

Apart from radio and television appearances, Caterina Lichtenberg has undertaken large concert tours through almost entire Europe as well as through the USA, Canada, Mongolia and Japan.

Numerous compositions have been written for her and for Duetto Giocondo. The corresponding music editions have been published by: Zimmermann, GVH, V & F, Mel Bay.
