Introducing the Wyatt Rice Pick!

Made in collaboration with Wyatt for over 2 years, these picks are designed to replicate his handmade shell picks. With these picks, Wyatt and I started from the ground up. At the outset, Wyatt sent me a few of his own handmade shell picks, so that we had the same reference point. With these picks in hand, I visited a number of plastics distributors around the state, where I was able to get ahold of a wide variety of “cutoffs” of high-performance plastics. When thinned down to 1.2mm, the material was flex tested (and compared with shell material). Long story short, one of the materials was more promising than the rest, (PEI**), and we actually ended up exploring multiple “grades” of the material… It was not easy, but we found the good stuff!

… also, the bevel mimics the same wear pattern that I observe on Wyatt's picks, which helps to provide a natural sound and feel. In particular, the degree and amount of this bevel is a big part of the equation here, and something that took me a while to get right.

Note: No CAD programs were used in the creation of this pick, and the slightly lopsided triangle is an intentional feature that was not corrected to preserve its authentic character.
